Acute disseminated toxoplasmosis in an immunocompetent adult patient. Case report

Abstract Introduction: Toxoplasmosis is a disease of global distribution caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii, which develops differently depending on immunologic status patient. In immunocompetent patients, it usually asymptomatic and complications such as pneumonitis, encephalitis, or multiple organ dysfunction are rare. The following case an patient with acute disseminated toxoplasmosis. Case report: A 42-year-old man, no history immunocompromise, relevant medical, family personal history, was transferred to emergency department tertiary care institution in city Bogotá D.C. (Colombia) due fever that had lasted for month, headache, progressive neurological deterioration. Studies looking other infectious etiologies, well autoimmunity, neoplasms, metabolic disorders, were negative. Computed tomography (CT) skull showed findings meningoencephalitis. He considered possible toxoplasmosis treatment trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole initiated. During his stay intensive unit (ICU), he developed syndrome (MODS) ultimately died. post-mortem histopathological study tissues reported presence gondii bradyzoites, confirmed diagnosis Conclusions: Acute diagnostic challenge because can mimic etiologies. timely may prevent medical increase patient's chances recovery. Knowledge about this patients subject being developed.
